BYUH Student App

Branding
Identity System

A team of students, who developed a third-party app for our alma mater, consulted me for a rebrand of their current user interface for the app.

BRIEF

The main goal of the group was to help students of Brigham Young University of Hawaii by developing an app that provides tools that help navigate students in their campus life.

CHALLENGE

The existing user interface design (and the overall design system) presented opportunities for improvements. To improve the user experience of the students using the app, the identity system needs to be cohesive, the navigation should be made conspicuous, and the composition of the elements requires proper layout.

APPROACH

To make the application more user-friendly, we simplified the layout and the color selection. We used hierarchy of visual information to highlight important and urgent information.

BRANDING

We based the color from the primary color of the school which is Crimson Red. We then added light pink and bright red to create an illusion of monochromatic colors while adding vibrance to the interface.

For the design elements and typography, we made illustrations and used a modern geometric typeface to complement the refreshing and innovative features of the app.

HOME SCREEN

In the older UI, the events is inside a card element. That means that the user has to click two times more. To improve the user flow, the new UI puts the events as a hero image in the home screen.

The navigation bar is also added at the bottom to help indicate which page the user is currently viewing.

RESULT

The revised user interface is now more simple which in turn results to a more direct and smooth user flow and better experience.
